  • Tim Scott Makes an Inexcusable, Head-Scratching Endorsement – RedState

    f73ae931-a957-4255-a3c8-0b44d12b6222-1200x630.jpg

As Republicans go, Sen. Tim Scott is fairly run-of-the-mill. While I don’t agree with the 2024 hype surrounding him, his voting record is solid, he’s had some noteworthy moments, and I’ve never found any reason to oppose him or his ascension within the party.

Unfortunately, Scott just lost me with one of the most inexcusable, head-scratching endorsements of the current cycle. Here’s what he put on social media on Wednesday.

I have a pretty high tolerance for squishy Republicans who I don’t always see eye-to-eye with, so no one should mistake the criticism I’m about to levy as some kind of inflexible, purist screed. When Sen. John Cornyn recently led an effort to pass gun control, for example, I disagreed with it, but I didn’t call for him to be primaried. I recognize that there will always be Republicans in the party who go in a different direction at times than I’d prefer. That’s part of being in a political…

  • ‘We Are Not Doing Fear’: Ron DeSantis Blasts States Declaring Monkeypox Emergencies

    62eb8ae020000034009014b5.jpeg?cache=o5letMBayO&ops=1778_1000

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) on Wednesday criticized lawmakers in other states for treating monkeypox as an emergency, saying his state will not bow to fear in response to the outbreak.

DeSantis, who gained notoriety for aggressively resisting COVID public safety measures, including mask and vaccine mandates, accused officials of using monkeypox to scare people.

“I’m so sick of politicians — and we saw this with COVID — trying to sow fear into the population,” DeSantis, said at a news conference.

He continued: “We are not doing fear.”

DeSantis is seen as a potential 2024 GOP presidential hopeful who could challenge former President Donald Trump. He’s up for reelection as governor in November. Though he has bragged about his no-rules pandemic policies, Florida’s COVID infection and death rates far exceeded the national average, according to FactCheck.org.

“You see some of these states declaring states of emergency, they’re gonna abuse those powers to restrict your freedom,” DeSantis warned about monkeypox orders. “I guarantee to you that’s what will happen.”

California and Illinois on Monday became the latest states to declare monkeypox a public health…

  • DeSantis Spokeswoman Teases ‘Major’ Announcement That Will Trigger ‘The Liberal Media Meltdown of the Year’

Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis will be triggering what his spokeswoman says is the “liberal media meltdown of the year.”

Only one hint came from press secretary Christine Pushaw: Whatever it is that will rock liberals’ world is related to his role as governor, not speculation that he might run for the White House in 2024.

“MAJOR announcement tomorrow morning from @GovRonDeSantis,” she tweeted Wednesday night. “Prepare for the liberal media meltdown of the year. Everyone get some rest tonight.”

Pushaw later said no one had correctly guessed the announcement, which was slated for 10 a.m. ET Thursday.

  • Secret Service Considers Disabling Texting On Agents’ Phones Amid Missing Records Fallout

    62eba0762000005e009014ce.jpeg?cache=LFfFP7M7iO&ops=1778_1000

The U.S. Secret Service is reportedly considering disabling text messages on agents’ phones as it continues to deal with the fallout of the purging of phone records from the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection.

Secret Service Director James Murray on Tuesday informed employees of the plan in a memo on Tuesday, sources told CNN. The agency first will look into how disabling texts could interfere with agents’ work and communication with outside law enforcement. If implemented, the change would be in place until the Secret Service figures out a system to preserve records.

The Department of Homeland Security’s inspector general, which oversees the Secret Service, has been criticized for failing to alert Congress over missing phone records linked to Jan. 6. The watchdog learned in February that texts, including those exchanged with agents assigned to former President Donald Trump during the insurrection, were missing, but did not notify lawmakers until recently.

House lawmakers had requested DHS maintain records related to Jan. 6 investigations twice in January 2021. Yet, the Secret Service said it undertook a preplanned data migration that wiped agents’ phones.

    The Jan. 6 committee…

  • Agent’s Take: Dissecting and trying to make sense of the Deshaun Watson discipline case

    gettyimages-1412674588.jpg

The long-anticipated decision of whether Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson violated the NFL’s personal conduct policy was issued on Monday by disciplinary officer Sue L. Robinson, who was jointly appointed by the NFL and NFLPA. Watson’s case was the first under a revamped process in the NFL collective bargaining agreement where commissioner Roger Goodell is no longer the sole arbiter of personal conduct discipline.

The retired U.S. District Court judge suspended Watson six games for violating the policy without imposing a fine. Since suspensions are without pay, Watson forfeits $345,000 (or 6/18ths of the $1.035 million 2022 base salary) because he earns $57,500 each of the 18 weeks in the regular season. None of Watson’s $44.935 million signing bonus in the fully guaranteed, five-year contract worth $230 million he signed in March as a part of trade from the Texans is in jeopardy because of the way the contract is structured. Robinson also thought it was necessary for Watson’s massage therapy to be limited to team-approved massage therapists for the remainder of his career.

    On Wednesday, the NFL informed…

  • ‘Star Wars’ Actor John Boyega: Films Made Him ‘Exhausted, Frantic And Paranoid’

    62eb6f052000005e00901497.jpeg?cache=Ej6xgTbh0P&ops=1778_1000

Actor John Boyega revealed in a new interview he thought about quitting acting as he powered through numerous projects in recent years.

Boyega, known for his role as Finn in the “Star Wars” franchise, told Men’s Health a number of back-to-back films and a stage role left him “exhausted, frantic, and paranoid.”

The films, including a “Pacific Rim” sequel and “Star Wars: Episode VII,” were part of a period where he had no time off, according to the magazine.

“You’re tired by your own dream, what you love,” Boyega said.

The actor, who described a hiatus he took to “recharge,” told Men’s Health his “battery power” has been ambition.

That battery power, however, has pushed Boyega to wear himself down before.

“It’s tiring and it’s stress, and then dealing with the fact that you eventually have to perform,” Boyega said. “There are many different ways careers can exhaust you, but the artistic way is unique.”

Boyega also weighed in on racist comments “Star Wars” Actor Moses Ingram, who is Black, received after playing Reva in this year’s Disney+ series “Obi-Wan Kenobi.”

Boyega himself faced racism after playing Finn in “Star Wars:…

  • Hump Day Briefing: Lefties on Abortion, Doocy Cracks Jokes, Jensen Defends Pro-Lifers

    2022-08-03-WH-Briefing-Doocy.jpg?itok=4pyovYRI

Early Wednesday afternoon, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre decided to face reporters solo for a press briefing, doing so for only the 14th time out of her 41 briefings since taking the top job. And, as part of this hapless endeavor, she faced questions from both the left and right on abortion with the Biden administration set to expand the funding for abortions s well as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-CA) visit to Taiwan.

Fox’s Peter Doocy used his time to press Jean-Pierre on the latter topic, starting with this quip that left Jean-Pierre chuckling about his word choice: “How come Republicans seem more jazzed about Speaker Pelosi’s trip than the President?”

“You’re going to have to ask Republicans. ‘Jazzed?’ Do they have jazz hands, Peter,” Jean-Pierre replied, adding in her attempt at some parental humor.

Doocy played a long for a few seconds before cutting back to the chase and whether the lack of public support for Pelosi visiting the island democracy boiled down to Biden being “worried about hurting” the “feelings” of Communist China dictator Xi Jinping (click “expand”):

    DOOCY: Do I have jazz…

  • Riverside bans homeless camps in Santa Ana River

    ?url=https%3A%2F%2Fcalifornia-times-brightspot.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fzbk%2Fdamlat_images%2FLA%2FLA_PHOTO_SELECTS%2F2017_11%2F3026159_la-me-santa-ana-homeless_6_AJS.JPG

In an effort to address a burgeoning unhoused population and increasing fire risk, the Riverside City Council has approved a ban on camping or sleeping in areas where undeveloped vegetation runs up against homes, including the Santa Ana River bottom.

The ordinance makes it illegal to “sit, lie, sleep, or store, use, maintain, or place any bulky item or personal property” in the so-called wildland-urban interface. Before the 6-1 vote Tuesday night, city officials cited an anticamping ordinance passed last year by the Los Angeles City Council designating certain areas off-limits to encampments; the law has drawn criticism from activists who say it criminalizes homelessness.

Councilmember Clarissa Cervantes was the lone no vote, citing concerns that there will not be enough shelter for everyone living in the river bottom.

Exacerbated by extreme drought, probable “human-caused” fires have ignited in the river bottom over the years, prompting officials to propose the anticamping ordinance. In the last five years, the Riverside Fire Department has responded to 163 calls for vegetation fires in the Santa Ana River bottom, 66% of which were caused by humans, according to a city…

  • The Kansas abortion vote just means the system is working – HotAir

    a18cd545-9aa6-4d7a-8957-7e6b4a40588d-1200x630.jpg

The vote in Kansas this week to maintain abortion access no doubt came as a surprise to many people, including yours truly. The left immediately began setting their hair on fire as if some seismic shift in the nation’s profile had taken place. Trevor Noah spent his entire show doing a victory dance. The editorial board of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch proclaimed that “This is America’s stance.” Here’s a little bit of what that looked like.

National polls have long indicated that Americans, including Republicans, strongly favor keeping abortion legal, within reason. The Kansas results confirm it.

Pro-choice forces in Missouri and around America should embrace the message here: Americans broadly support abortion rights even in places where their elected representatives don’t. With red-state legislatures generally sitting far to the right of their constituents, going around them and directly to the people is one way to mitigate the damage conservative Supreme Court justices have done.

This editorial makes the same mistake that many conservative elected officials in red states have made about their voters. It broadly assumes too much and seeks to turn a single example…
